Message from Rabbi Sue

rabbi sue morningstar

Dear Friends,

So much has transpired for our congregation in the last few weeks! From the sad loss of Ed Brosbe, may his memory be for a blessing, to the joy of the Bar Mitzvah celebration of Noah Falkner, we are all strengthened by the support of our beautiful community and love of our extended family.

I just returned from Boulder, Colorado, where, in the shadow of  the awesome Flatiron Mountains, I attended the Aleph annual rabbinic conference. It was such a nourishing and inspiring experience! 150 rabbis davening, singing, eating, studying, schmoozing, laughing and crying together. I learned so much on all levels of mind, heart and soul and am so grateful to have been able to partake in this rich and deep experience. I look forward to sharing some of that experience with you during our Shabbat service this week.

This week’s Torah portion is Parashat Bo, where we read about the Exodus from Egypt and the origins of the mezuzah. We will be exploring the significance of the “petach”, the doorway, the space between the inside and the outside. How many events can you remember from the Tanach in which the doorway was significant?

Please join Cantor Bella and me this Shabbat morning as we gather at TES at 10 am for a Torah service. I am eager to see you again!

Love, Rabbi Sue

A Message from the Board of Trustees

This past week, our hearts have been heavy with the passing of one of our beloved congregants, Ed Brosbe. Ed and Leyah Brosbe have been the most joyous of congregants here at Temple Emek Shalom for many years. Recently, Ed and Leyah moved to California to be closer to their family. Their departure caught a few of us off guard and we lamented knowing the Brosbes had moved away. Ed and Leyah had been a source of warmth for this congregation. We were sad to see their chairs empty on Shabbat.

Ed was a true mensch. Even in passing, he gifted this congregation. He gave us a reason to come together to share community and wonderful stories about Ed and Leyah. He gave us a chance to know Ed better. (Did you know he had his own table tennis paddle because he loved the game so much?) He gave us the chance to tell Leyah and their family how loved the Brosbes are (I say this in the present tense because Ed and Leyah will always be in the "present" to us). He gave us a chance to say goodbye, something many of us missed. He gave us a chance to reaffirm our faith in God as well as our faith in each other. In sum, Ed was a remarkable man who gave TES remarkable gifts. We are grateful for all that Ed and Leyah have done. Ed is deeply missed. We send our thoughts and prayers to Leyah for comfort.

Sadly, it's time to say Goodbye...
and hope to see you soon!

Two beloved TES member "families" have moved out of state...

HOT OFF THE PRESS:
Rabbi Marc's Farewell Prayer/Concert CD

Rabbi-Marc-Farewell-Concert

(excerpts from the CD)

For the last decade, I have had the blessing of leading a group of outstanding musicians in an exploration of Jewish prayer through ancient and modern Jewish "world" music. The journey led to the discovery of some incredible music and some deep prayerful experiences....

This prayer-concert took place on September 24, 2011. It was offered as an act of love to the congregation following my decision to leave the congregation due to the challenges of living for 10 years with Parkinson's Disease....

The prayer-concert includes some of the work we all held most near and dear to our hearts and souls. I hope you will find that you, too, are moved by this sacred music and will carry it close to your hear and your soul. That way the blessings will continue to flow.

B'shalom,

Rabbi Marc Sirinsky
