SUMMARY:Mahloket Matters: How to Disagree Constructively
DESCRIPTION:Mahloket Matters:  How to Disagree Constructively\nA 7-session
class (6-sessions left) taught by Emily Simon\nSunday\, January 19th and
 will run ~ every other week.\n10:30 - 11:45 am\, TES Conference Room and Z
oom\n \n\nMost people concur that civil discourse has deteriorated to an
extent that endangers democracy. We are unable to listen to one another\,
let alone understand each other. We have progressively tuned in to the exc
lusive echoes of our own silos.\n\nIs it possible to productively engage t
hose with whom we disagree?  Can Jewish text study empower us to engage m
ore constructively in disagreements today?\n\nJoin a 7-session class taugh
t by Emily Simon to study mahloket l’shem shamayim (constructive disagre
ements) as a vital tool to generate critical thinking and personal growth.
Text study can be used to increase the desire and ability to understand a
nd engage more constructively with conflicting political opinions today.\n
\nEach class will present a mahloket (disagreement) in classical Jewish te
xts that is relevant to a unique aspect of modern life and contemporary ch
allenges. For example\, our classes will cover topics such as DEI (diversi
ty\, equity and inclusion)\, truth vs peace\, public shaming\, and if Zion
ists and anti-Zionists can share the same tent.\n\nFor a complete list of
dates and topics click here.  Classes will be ~every other Sunday beginni
ng January 5 through March 30 from 10:30 until 11:45 am at Temple Emek Sha
lom in Ashland\, Oregon or on Zoom. No Hebrew or prior study is necessary
for this course.\n\nYou can register for the class here.  This class will
be free for TES members and cost $120 for non-TES member households.  Al
l donations/fees cover the costs of security\, class materials\, and techn
ology.  If the cost is a barrier to your attending\, please contact Rabbi
  Julie (rabbijulie@emekshalom.org).
