2 was a banner year for Social Justice at Temple Emek Shalom. We celebrat
ed an earth day fair\, and forged a trusting relationship with BASE (the B
lack Alliance for Social Empowerment). Largely because of our efforts\, th
e police Liaison project is now up and running\, with an oversight committ
ee from within the black community and a permanent experienced police liai
son who has contracted with BASE to provide the actual police liaison serv
ices. His name is Shenmiakhu (formerly known as Brandon Lee) and you can
read all about him and his experience\, and the organization he has formed
at the website - train4transformation.com.\n\nAt our meeting on October 1
9th\, just in time for the new year\, we will have an opportunity to dialo
gue with Shenmiakhu about how his spiritual path drives him to do the work
that he does\, as we share the importance of the work that we do within a
Jewish context. Shenmiakhu is excited to hear what motivates us spiritua
lly\, and how he and others can support our struggles\, as we have support
ed BASE. He will also share with us his vision and ideas for how we can co
ntinue to support BASE.\n\nWe hope that you will join us on October 19th a
t 7 pm on Zoom for the next step in our ongoing relationship with BASE. I
f you have hungered for a true dialogue with mutual respect on both sides\
, we think that your soul will be fed by this meeting.\n\nThank you for su
pporting Social Justice this past year and working to make a change. In th

SUMMARY:Mahloket Matters: How to Disagree Constructively — The Beit Midra
 sh Way
DESCRIPTION:\nMahloket Matters: How to Disagree Constructively —
The Be
it Midrash Way\; a five-week course taught by\nEmily Simon at Temple Emek
Shalom in Ashland Oregon\nClasses are on Sunday afternoons from 3:30-5:00
starting\nOctober 23 and concluding November 20\nMost people concur that c
ivil discourse has deteriorated to an extent that endangers democratic gov
ernment. We are unable to listen to one another\, let alone understand eac
h other. We have progressively tuned in to the exclusive echoes of our own
silos.\nIs it yet possible to find the courage to productively engage tho
se with whom we disagree? Can text study of Biblical stories and their div
erse interpretations empower us to engage more constructively in disagreem
ents today?\nCome join Emily Simon in an exploration of ways to express an
d appreciate differences of opinion for the sake of heaven. We will engage
constructively across differences\, by examining our traditional and cont
emporary texts in the format of the traditional beit midrash (study hall).
By learning how to disagree respectfully over Jewish texts\, we can use t
his model to shine a light on problems that we face in our society today\,
and to facilitate civil discourse.\n\n\nBy popular demand\, this class is
now being offered as a hybrid class\, in-person and on Zoom. So\, for tho
se of you who are out of town\, or who can’t make it LIVE to the class\,
you can attend any or all the classes via Zoom at the regular TES Zoom li
nk. In addition to many people asking that it be available on Zoom\, the o
ther reason for the change is because Dr. Pollin’s group from Portland w
ill no longer be joining us\, and we want to make sure that there is a rob
ust enough group for Havurata study.\nAfter an introduction to the Rabbini
c Concepts of the Beit Midrash Way\, the curriculum\nwill include:\n– Me
et or Refuse to Meet? From Korach and Moses to Political Adversaries Today
\n– Fear War or Trust Peace? From Jacob and Esau through Chamberlain and
Menachem Begin to Today\n– Xenophobia or National Security? From Pharao
h and the Israelites through Japanese Internment to Today\n– “Fake New
s” or Uncovering the Truth? From Joseph and his brothers through Jeffers
on and Hamilton to Today\nMs. Simon is a graduate of the Pardes Institute
’s Mahloket Matters program. The class is free for members of Temple Eme
k Shalom and $36 for non-members. Registration is required. To register pl
ease email Zyaire Hogwood at office@emekshalom.org or call (541) 488-2909.

SUMMARY:Racial Justice Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Racial Justice Meeting\nWednesday\, November 16th\n7:00 - 8:30
pm\nOn the TES Zoom link\nThis past month has been eventful on many leve
ls. Although increased anti-Semitic rhetoric and threats have\, once agai
n\, featured largely in the news and in our society\, on the positive side
\, we also have received the solidarity and support from our friends and a
llies in BASE (the Black Alliance for Social Empowerment). Last week we s
hared Shenmiakhu's\, (BASE's Police Liaison) message of concern and suppor
t for our community\, in light of those events.\n\nAt our upcoming Racial
 Justice meeting\, on Wednesday\, November 16th\, at 7:00 pm\, our topic wi
ll be that of Allyship - the role of advocating and showing solidarity for
the inclusion of marginalized or politicized groups that are not of our
own community. We will address next steps in actively speaking out agains
t racist threats and acts that have dominated the Ashland news lately.\n\
nPlease join us\, and let us explore ways to further our work for social a
nd racial equity in our local community.

to focus on in March!\n\nThe first issue will the Antisemitism Proclamati
on that the City of Ashland unanimously adopted in early February. This wa
s BIG DEAL and we would like to see other cites\, both locally and through
out the state\, adopt similar proclamations. We will also discuss how we m
ight get something at the state level. It is very important that we have a
clearly defined plan for how to achieve our goals so that we maximize our
