5782 was a banner year for Social Justice at Temple Emek Shalom. We celebrated an earth day fair, and forged a trusting relationship with BASE (the Black Alliance for Social Empowerment). Largely because of our efforts, the police Liaison project is now up and running, with an oversight committee from within the black community and a permanent experienced police liaison who has contracted with BASE to provide the actual police liaison services. His name is Shenmiakhu (formerly known as Brandon Lee) and you can read all about him and his experience, and the organization he has formed at the website –
train4transformation.com.
At our meeting on October 19th, just in time for the new year, we will have an opportunity to dialogue with Shenmiakhu about how his spiritual path drives him to do the work that he does, as we share the importance of the work that we do within a Jewish context. Shenmiakhu is excited to hear what motivates us spiritually, and how he and others can support our struggles, as we have supported BASE. He will also share with us his vision and ideas for how we can continue to support BASE.
We hope that you will join us on October 19th at 7 pm on Zoom for the next step in our ongoing relationship with BASE. If you have hungered for a true dialogue with mutual respect on both sides, we think that your soul will be fed by this meeting.
Thank you for supporting Social Justice this past year and working to make a change. In the coming year, may we see the fruits of our labors, may our struggles lessen, our burdens be lightened and joy and justice increase.
